Registration now OPEN! June UnLearn and Learn Session: Neurodiversity

Join us on June 13, 2024 at 12:00 – 1:30 pm ET for an UnLearn and Learn Session on neurodiversity

In this session, Wendy McGuire (MSW, RSW, PhD), Owner of Scattergram Counselling and Consulting, will support regulators’ learning journey on neurodiversity. Wendy is a former professor of social work, a mom, friend, colleague, teacher, and therapist to neurodivergent people of all ages and walks of life. Unable to access effective services for her own neurodivergent family members and lacking a model for providing these services in her group therapy practice, she combined her academic knowledge and lived experience to build a new framework for neurodiversity-affirming care called the ACCEPT Program (tm) .

Wendy will provide regulators with neurodiversity-affirming knowledge and tools based on her practice model and professional experience. Attendees will learn about:

  • key concepts about neurodiversity;

  • barriers the neurodivergent population faces in accessing neurodiversity-affirming professional services;

  • the paradigm shift from the perception of neurodivergence as disorder to difference and why this matters;

  • differences between neurotypical and neurodivergent operating systems (brains and nervous systems) and communication styles; and

  • steps that regulatory bodies can take to be neurodiversity-affirming, accessible, and inclusive.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Wendy throughout the session and during a Q&A.

CNAR’s UnLearn and Learn Series supports the "UnLearning" of biases or assumptions we unconsciously hold. These may be personal biases; they may also exist structurally in organizations, systems, and society. The series helps to identify blind spots and determine how to change practices.
